Many residents of Washington will know the pit wheel currently situated in Albany.
Did you know however that it is actually from Silksworth Pit, where it was in use from 1868 – 1971, before being placed in Albany?
Jimmy Warne, the Labour Party candidate for Washington West, which covers Albany said “The wheel is going to be returned to it’s righful home as part of a wider project to celebrate our culture and heritage. I worked in the shipyards, one of the other industries our region is famous for, and I am delighted about the opportunities to celebrate this investment will bring to Albany”
Jimmy went on to say “The Sunderland West Area Committee, which covers Silksworth, has agreed to cover the cost of refurbishing the wheel, currently at the F-Pit museum. It will also include the cost of placing it where the Silksworth wheel currently stands meaning residents will still see a wheel there for many years to come!”
This will be alongside the investment of around £4.6 million to improve the Washington F-Pit museum and turn it into a visitor attraction and educational facility. Jimmy Warne has welcomed the investment and noted that “it will of course always be a celebration of our mining heritage but also an opportunity to grow a vibrant community and celebrate all that is good about Washington past, present and future.”
